* – Irish Rail trains begin serving the town of Dunboyne, after a gap of 43 years, using the newly built Dunboyne railway station. Until the following station is built (the M3 Parkway station), all services on the Dublin–Navan railway line will terminate here. The Railway Works order for the line's extension is expected to be filed in May 2011.

* – Refurbishment of Newport railway station, which includes a building consisting mostly of ETFE is completed, in preparation of Newport's hosting of the Ryder Cup Golf tournament. Car parking facilities have yet to be finished. The project was the largest station refurbishment in Wales, doubling the overall size of the station building.

* – The NanchangJiujiang Railway in China opens for regular service. The railway is long. Trains will travel at on the line, cutting the travel time between the two cities to 45 minutes.

* – A new Manchester Metrolink station serving the MediaCityUK complex is opened. The new station lies at the end of a spur from the Eccles line which was built as part of Phase 3 of the Metrolink expansion project. Trams serving this station will run to Cornbrook via Harbour City.

* – At approximately 4:45 AM local time, a North Central Railway freight train runs past a stop signal and collides with the stationary ''Gwalior Intercity Express'' at the station in Badarwas, India. * – During a heavy rain storm that brought visibility to near zero, a commuter train and intercity passenger train collide at the Bir El Bay railway station, near Tunis in Tunisia. * – Construction begins on the LhasaShigatse Railway started in Tibet. The railway is long and trains will travel at on the line. 45.7% of the railway will be laid on bridges or in tunnels, with a total of 96 bridges and 29 tunnels on the line. 13 stations will be built. The line is expected to be completed in 4 years.
